Your Child’s First Dental Visit: A Parent’s Brief Guide on What to Expect

Taking your child to the dentist for the first time is a milestone that can feel equal parts exciting and overwhelming. However, you might have questions about everything that’ll occur during this important appointment. You’re not alone in these worries, and the good news is that a first dental visit is usually a lot gentler and simpler than most parents expect! Here’s a brief guide to walk you through.

What Exactly Happens During the Appointment?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), your child’s first dental visit should happen as soon as their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. Many parents are surprised to learn that dental care should begin this early, but starting young helps establish healthy habits, allows their dentist to monitor development from the very beginning, and helps your child get comfortable with the dental environment before any major work is ever needed.

That said, the main thing you can definitely expect is a comprehensive exam. For very young children, the exam is often done while your baby is sitting in your lap. The dentist will use a clean finger to gently examine your child’s gums, emerging teeth, and oral tissues. They’ll also chat with you about topics like teething, thumb-sucking, bottle usage, and their diet, in order to get all of the context they need. Of course, you’ll also have the chance to ask any questions that come to mind about how to manage their oral hygiene at home and what milestones to look for.

There’s often no need for X-rays or any prolonged procedures; the entire appointment is designed to be informative, positive, and above all else, comfortable so that your child’s first dental experience doesn’t upset them.

How Can I Prepare My Child for the Appointment?

A little preparation goes a long way, and there is a lot you can do at home to help make your child’s first appointment a good experience:

  • Use very simple and upbeat language when talking to your child about the appointment, and avoid words like “needle,” “drill,” or “hurt.”
  • Read books or watch videos about dental visits beforehand; there are many kid-friendly resources out there that introduce the concept of going to the dentist in a positive way.
  • Try to schedule the appointment at a time when your child is typically well-rested and fed; if they’re tired or hungry, they’re more likely to be irritable!
  • Bring comfort items such as their favorite stuffed animal or blanket to their appointment. Calming music can also be helpful.
  • Stay cool and collected; children pick up on parental anxiety quickly, so stay positive and let your child follow your lead!
