If your child has an upcoming dental appointment and they\u2019ll be receiving sedation<\/a>, it\u2019s completely normal to have questions about how to prepare. Whether they\u2019re receiving nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or something a little deeper, proper preparation plays a big role in keeping the appointment stress-free for all involved. With that in mind, here\u2019s what you can do in the days leading up to the appointment to help you and your child feel confident and ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Know When to Stop Foods and Drinks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important parts of sedation prep is following fasting guidelines, which can vary depending on the type of sedation your child is receiving. As a general rule, most children need to stop eating solid foods at least 8 hours before their appointment (midnight is usually a safe cut-off), and up until their appointment they should avoid drinking anything except for a small amount of water. However, since exact timing can vary, always go by what their dental team says ahead of time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let Their Dentist Know About Medications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your child takes daily medication, you shouldn\u2019t stop giving it to them without speaking with their doctor and their dental team first. In many cases, things like asthma inhalers or prescriptions for chronic conditions can still be taken safely prior to dental sedation. Just be sure to communicate every medication and supplement your child takes, along with correct dosages, so tailored, safe instructions can be provided, or adjustments can be made as needed.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay Calm and Set the Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the day of the appointment, dress your child in comfortable clothes and don\u2019t hesitate to bring a comfort item with them for the car ride, like a blanket, stuffed animal, or their favorite toy. Playing their favorite music can also be soothing! Also try to arrive a few minutes early so you aren\u2019t stressed from battling traffic, and don\u2019t hesitate to show up with questions for your child\u2019s dental team. A calm, well-rested child typically handles dental sedation well, and if they\u2019re fully informed about the process and know what to expect, it\u2019s easy to ensure a smooth experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
